Origins of a Rivalry
The story begins in the mid-19th century, a time when rugby was still in its infancy. Amidst the bustling streets of London, a group of enthusiastic individuals came together to form what would later become Richmond Rugby Football Club in 1861. In the verdant fields of Blackheath, another group laid the foundation of what is now Blackheath Rugby Football Club, established in 1858.
From these humble beginnings emerged a shared passion for the sport, and it wasn’t long before the two clubs found themselves drawn into a fierce yet respectful rivalry. The stage was set for what would become the oldest fixture in rugby history – a tradition that has endured for over a century and a half. The first fixture took place on 2nd January 1864 on Richmond Green as both teams saw out a nil-nil draw.
